Have contacted Polar again today and will await a reply as they are not manning the live chat at the moment and I will keep trying in the meantime but if not sorted soon it will be a return, refund and another look at Garmin as even if I was to upgrade I may very well be in the same boat firmware wise.

I even tried old versions of the android Flow app to rule out software issue with no joy, it is almost like it is not doing a firmware check at all when syncing which could be a server side issue or a fault with the default 3.1.7 firmware already on the device (unlikely but can't rule out). I have now tried 2 windows PC's with recent Flowsync software, an iPhone and 3 android devices with Flow software and various build versions of Android Inc version 10 and still no prompt to update firmware. So contacted Amazon (supplier) who after explain to them sent me out a new device which arrived today and still the same issue, no firmware prompt for update. Then told me to send to them for service/repair or back to Amazon as probably faulty at a cost to me. Since the original post I contacted Polar support who advised to factory reset and try again, which I had already done. I have emailed the UK customer support team and awaiting a response but in the meantime can anyone here help shine some light on this?
It is updating my data from the watch to Flow and training plans from Flow to the watch. I have tried both Flowsync on PC (3.0.xxxx) with recent software, I have tried via Android Flow App (4.4.6) on two separate devices but still nothing. So more research done and all articles relating to the upgrading of firmware point to being asked to upgrade when syncing started, wait and it's done, however I am not being asked to upgrade firmware. Upon wearing and navigating I noticed some of the functions listed were missing so upon doing a bit of research I noted that many were added as a firmware upgrade, so looking in to this noted the watches firmware was still showing as 3.1.7 not the 5.0 showing as available on their website.
Anyway charged the device and synced/setup the device using the Flowsync app on PC. Those who were having issues updating the Vantage M watch should now be able to update using the most recent version of the Polar Flow app (can take upto 20 min to do) or via the PolarSync software for Windows or Mac and cable (quickest and most effective method) *
